Barcamp Bangalore 3 - What, Why, Who
Mar 27th, 2007 by arunram

Barcamp Bangalore 3 is around the corner. If you have heard about the buzz and wondering what it is all about? Look no further…
Rajan and I (both part of the organizing team for BCB3) decided to put together a brief write up to describe what Barcamps are about and why are they organized. This is what we came up with…
Barcamp is an ad-hoc gathering born out of the desire for people to meet up, share, exchange ideas and possibilities in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants. BarCamp is an international network of events that have been held in over 31 cities worldwide. The name is a playful allusion to its origins, with reference to the hacker slang term, foobar: BarCamp arose as a spin-off and response to Foo Camp, an annual invitation-only event hosted by open source publishing luminary, Tim O’Reilly. The first BarCamp was held in Palo Alto, California, in August 2005. Since then, BarCamps have been held across North America, South America, Europe and Asia — from Boston to Bangalore.
Barcamp Bangalore is in its third edition with the current theme being “Internet, Mobile & Society” where in addition to regular tech speak and demos, discussions about how technology impacts our society and lives will be sparked. The event will be held at the sprawling campus of Indian Institute of Management Bangalore on March 31st and April 1st, 2007. The previous editions of Barcamp Bangalore (BCB) were held in April and Dec 2006.
The vision of Barcamp Bangalore is bring together technology enthusiasts, thinkers, designers and visionaries together and thereby create an ecosystem for the ideation, cross pollination and germination of ideas that could lead to realization. Barcamp Bangalore is one of the most popular Barcamps in India and attracts a pan-indian following of techies and entrepreneurs alike and an increasing global interest. Many entrepreneurs use Barcamp as a platform for validating and/or showcasing their ideas and products. Business World carried an article that detailed this new trend.
As of this moment the event stats are as follows:
- 2 days
- 400+ plus participants who have registered
- participants from 3 countries
- participants from 5 cities in India
- 6 sponsors
It doesn’t get more exciting than this. You can find out more details about the event at www.barcampbangalore.org. You can register for the event here.
